At a time when sustainability and environmental protection matter more and more, the cosmetics industry faces the challenge of finding eco-friendly solutions for its products. One of the biggest challenges is choosing the right packaging. One example of this conscious decision is the use of recycled PET (rPET) for the body lotion, the muscle gel, the pure aloe gel, the hair mask and the sun lotion, which are produced on the Canary Islands.
Glass undoubtedly has its advantages: it’s reusable, can be recycled endlessly and contains no harmful chemicals. Even so, there are scenarios in which glass isn’t the ideal solution. The extra weight of glass packaging would considerably increase energy consumption when transporting it to the island and back again. This would not only drive up transport costs but also enlarge the product’s carbon footprint. So in this particular case, using glass would do more harm than good for sustainability.
This is where rPET comes in. rPET stands for recycled polyethylene terephthalate, a material made from already-recycled plastic. It’s lighter than glass and therefore ideal for transport. Choosing rPET considerably reduces the CO₂ emissions caused by shipping. On top of that, rPET is itself fully recyclable, which means the packaging can be returned to the recycling loop after use.
Another advantage of rPET is its versatility. It’s durable and light, which makes it an ideal choice for our cosmetic packaging. The body lotion and all the other lotions benefit from it, because they can be transported safely without the risk of being damaged or contaminated.
The decision to use rPET as a packaging material is part of a larger sustainability concept. It’s not only about making the product itself more environmentally friendly, but also about considering the entire value chain. From sourcing raw materials through production to transport and the disposal of the packaging – every step is viewed through the lens of sustainability.
By opting for recycled materials like rPET, the need for new plastic production is reduced, which in turn lowers the consumption of fossil resources. At the same time it supports circular thinking, by reusing existing material and thus minimising environmental impact.
Of course, rPET isn’t the perfect answer to every challenge in the cosmetics industry. There are still difficulties around recycling infrastructure, the quality of recycled material and consumer acceptance. But despite these challenges, the use of rPET shows that it’s possible to make sustainable choices even when conditions aren’t ideal.
The future of packaging technology lies in continuous improvement and innovation. New materials and processes are being developed to reduce environmental impact further. At the same time, consumers are becoming more aware of how important sustainable packaging is, which increases the pressure on the industry to offer eco-friendly alternatives.
We follow these developments very closely and will make changes when needed. Lifelong learning and all that. 🙂

Using rPET for our products is a good example of how companies can and want to act responsibly by considering a product’s entire life cycle. By choosing a light, recycled and recyclable material, we not only reduce the carbon footprint but also make an important contribution to the circular economy. It’s a step in the right direction, showing that sustainability and cosmetics can go hand in hand. Even so, it remains essential to keep watching the market and respond to new developments accordingly.
